 STEM: The Future of California

On February 13, 2020 at the Elks Club in San Bernardino, Tony Thurmond, the Californian State Superintendent of Public Schools, stated that STEM was the wave of the future for the children of California.

Thurmond, discussed that job skills that focused on science, technology, engineering and math were in high demand, and his intent was to ensure that all children of California had access to curriculum that would allow them to have the advantage for high paying jobs in the future.

What does this mean for us at Foothill Knolls?  Since we are a STEM school, we already focus on the direction that Superintendent Thurmond discussed.  We might have an advantage for now, but as other schools focus on STEM we could be left behind. It's time for us to make sure that our students continue to be set up for high earning jobs.

Some ideas to help our students have access to the skills needed would be to start after school clubs that focus on these areas.  One idea is to start a school robotics team. This would allow us to apply basic coding, mechanical, electrical, and problem solving skills.  Another example is to start math and science olympiad teams. What is your idea?
